Recruitment Success Highlighting Urgent Need for Healthcare Housing on Manitoulin Island

Manitoulin Island, ON — Manitoulin Health Centre (MHC) is experiencing success in recruiting healthcare professionals to the Island, but a growing lack of available and affordable housing is becoming a significant barrier to bringing these much-needed workers into the community.

Recent recruitment efforts have successfully attracted local graduates returning home to work, healthcare professionals from across Ontario, and nurses seeking to build their careers on Manitoulin Island. However, many candidates are now facing challenges securing suitable long-term accommodations.

“We are thrilled to see recruitment momentum building,” says Paula Fields, CEO & President of MHC. “We have Island graduates wanting to come home, provincial candidates interested in relocating, and educated nurses eager to join our healthcare teams. Unfortunately, housing availability is becoming one of the biggest obstacles to successfully onboarding these professionals.”

The issue is already impacting recruitment outcomes. One Registered Nurse candidate recently accepted a position elsewhere due to difficulties finding housing locally, while another RN candidate’s start date remains uncertain because accommodations have not yet been secured. In addition, three internationally educated nurses currently searching for housing are facing similar challenges.

MHC is asking community members, landlords, seasonal residents, and property owners to consider whether they may have long-term rental opportunities available for incoming healthcare workers.

“Healthcare recruitment is truly a community effort,” adds Fields. “We are bringing talented professionals to the Island who want to live, work, and contribute to our communities long-term. Access to housing is critical in making that possible.”
