Pedal for Purpose: Supporting Care Close to Home

On May 25, 2026, Manitoulin Island’s own Peter Carter will take on an incredible endurance challenge—one that reflects both personal determination and a strong commitment to community health.

Peter will participate in the Perth 700, a seven-day cycling event in Perth, Ontario, where riders complete 100 miles a day for a total of 700 miles. While the distance is impressive, Peter’s motivation goes far beyond the ride.

“For those that know me, anything I take on, I fully commit to. I truly believe we can make a difference,” he shares.

Through this effort, Peter aims to raise $10,000 in support of Manitoulin Health Centre’s Vital Visions – Higher Resolution Leads to Clearer Solutions campaign. Funds will support the purchase of new ultrasound equipment, helping ensure patients can access timely, accurate diagnostics close to home.

The Perth 700, originally launched in 2012 in support of pancreatic cancer research, has raised over $2 million. Peter and fellow cyclists have continued the event independently, supporting causes close to their communities.

A passionate advocate for active living, Peter has completed a cross-Canada cycling journey, logs over 10,000 kilometres annually, and remains active in the cycling community. Now living in Evansville with his wife, Laurie Zahnow, he continues to promote a lifestyle rooted in health, movement, and connection.

Peter hopes his ride will inspire others to get active and envisions growing this effort into an annual “Pedal for Purpose” initiative in support of local healthcare.

As staff, your support in sharing and promoting initiatives like this helps strengthen care across our community.
