Manitoulin Health Centre Kicks Off Mindemoya Emergency Department Renovation and Expansion

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 15 2021

Mindemoya, ON  - The Manitoulin Health Centre (MHC) is pleased to announce tenders have been approved and the MHC team celebrated with a shovel in the ground on Monday, June 14, 2021 for the planned renovation and expansion of the Mindemoya Emergency Department.  Construction is slated to complete in 2022.

“Let’s Emerg Together” is the campaign slogan chosen to champion the Capital Campaign - Mindemoya Site Emergency Department Renovation and Expansion Project.  The renovation will provide a clean line of sight to patient areas from the nursing station, greater patient confidentiality during a visit, a dedicated mental health observation suite, an extra bed in the trauma area, a larger chemotherapy suite and an infectious disease suite, complete with anteroom.

The total project cost is estimated to be $5 million.  MHC is funding one-half of the cost from its own resources and will be reaching out to the community and friends of MHC for assistance for the other half – $2.5 million.

When complete, the Mindemoya Emergency Department will be a space which is larger, safer, and more comfortable and welcoming for patients, the doctors and nurses who provide much needed care.

According to Angela Becks, the Fundraising Committee Chair for MHC said “Like many individuals on Manitoulin Island I have a history with this site.  I recently became aware that my Father was a member of the work crew that built the original hospital on this site in 1972.  It was sobering to know that when investigated by engineers, the integrity of the structure was adequate for an expansion and renovation.  Yes, it will need some renewal as part of the present project, but don't we all after 49 years, need a bit of patching?”.  Ms Becks reminds the public to reach out should you wish to help as every dollar counts.

MHC, the Board of Directors and the Fundraising Committee would like to express their sincere thanks to the community for their continued support and investment in the health of our community.  They would also like to thank the community in advance for their patience during the construction phase.
