POSITION SUMMARY
The Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) performs a variety of laboratory tests and procedures to assist physicians in diagnosing, monitoring, treating and preventing disease using prescribed methodologies whether they be totally automated, manual or a combination.
The Medical Laboratory Technologist analyzes test findings and maintains required records and reports, evaluates laboratory results and takes appropriate action, and uses quality control measures to determine the value of test procedures, equipment, solutions and reagents.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Apply the principles of medical laboratory sciences basing practice on current techniques and scientific
knowledge - Analyze QC data for the purposes of quality control and verification of test results; implements corrective action
when required - Perform accurate, precise and verifiable tests and the timely reporting of results which will provide reliable and
timely information for the Clinician - Perform IQMH and other proficiency testing specimens and report results in a timely manner
- Perform the full range of tests and procedures related to the assigned section and/or site
- Recognize, troubleshoot and communicate equipment/reagent related malfunctions and initiate appropriate
remedial action in a timely manner - Monitor inventory and inform Lab Manager when re-orders are required
- Assist in the review and updating of policies and procedures
- Apply the Standards of Practice for Medical Laboratory Technologists as outlined by the CMLTO
- Assist in the orientation, training and in-servicing of staff and student
- Participate in studies and projects as required
- Attend meetings, seminars and lectures as required
- Perform other duties as required by the Laboratory Medical Director or Lab Manager

- Not remove or make ineffective any protective devices without providing an adequate temporary protective

- Not engage in horseplay
- Be familiar with procedures to be carried out in the event of a disaster (Emergency Preparedness Plans)

- Proficient in specimen collection, handling and processing
- Point of Care System proficiency
- Knowledge of and proficiency in handling and interpreting various quality control samples including internal,
external and blind duplicates - Ability to problem solve/troubleshoot and apply critical thinking skills to constructively investigate, evaluate and
solve technical issues - Knowledge of test principles and performance specifications for various analytical techniques
- Knowledge to interpret, document and report results on a variety of specimens
- Proficient in Microsoft Platform (Word, Excel and Outlook); Policy & Procedures platform and Learning
Management System - Proficient in Meditech Lab module
- Knowledge of and proficiency in instrument maintenance and function checks
QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Certifications, Experience, Licensure):
Required:
- Three year College Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
- Current professional registration and licensure with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario
Preferred:
- Recent/related experience in hospital setting
- Certification in Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)
STARTING WAGE:
- $36.84-50.24 per hour based on experience
